Celtics’ Rajon Rondo calls out Heat’s Dwyane Wade for ‘dirty plays’

The verbal battle between the Heat and Celtics continued Thursday. And as far as NBA beefs go, it’s fairly entertaining.

During the closing minute of the Heat’s season-opening victory over the Celtics, Rajon Rondo was hit with a flagrant foul for grabbing Dwyane Wade near the neck to thwart a drive.

“That was a punk play,” Wade said afterward. “He clotheslined me with two arms.”

Considering the history between the two, Rondo wasn’t about to hear that assessment without issuing a response.

ESPNBoston.com reports that Rondo swiped back at Wade.

“I mean, I don’t think it was a hard foul,” said Rondo. “[Wade] sold it a little bit, and that’s basketball. They were up, he drove to the hole, I didn’t want to give up a layup. Simple as that. I didn’t yank him down, or, dirty plays that you’ve seen him play in the past. So that’s what it is.”

During Game 3 of the 2011 Eastern Conference semifinals, Rondo and Wade got into an ugly tie-up that ended with Rondo suffering a dislocated elbow.

As ESPNBoston.com noted, Celtics coach Doc Rivers was ready to chalk this up as an eye for an eye.

Appearing Thursday on Boston sports radio WEEI, Rivers noted that Wade has “given a lot of hard fouls” in his career and pointed out that Rondo’s gruesome elbow injury during the 2011 playoffs was “created by Dwyane Wade.”

Added Rivers: “I don’t think [Rondo's flagrant] was a ‘punk’ move unless [Wade's foul] was, too.”

Mark your calendars: the Celtics host the Heat on Jan. 27.t Tha’s not only Ray Allen’s return to TD Garden, it’s also the next time Rondo and Wade will take the court together. More fireworks to come, for sure.

Wade is like that teacher's pet in grade school that is always smiling & polite to the teacher but goes about pinching you and poking you with pencils when the teacher isn't looking. The NBA as a product has at times become a farce, and as David90 mentioned this is what the '06 Finals were. I clearly remember one of the fouls he was given at the end for the 4th Q during that series where he drove for a layup completely out of control, jumped at the basket, flew and hit the ground arms & legs flailing (like only he can) with a defender trying to block the shot and on the replay you can see HE WASN"T EVEN TOUCHED!! But he sold that flop in a BIG way. This was typical of that series and his career in general. Soccer player have nothing on him.

That foul on Rondo? Complete PUNK move. Wade commits as many two hand grabs on preventing guys from layups/dunks on him when he gets beat as anyone in the league. Rondo's was mild compared to most of Wade's and I am not a Celtic/Rondo fan.

Sometimes I wish Charles Oakley was still around. Hmmm.

Wade is a disgrace to basketball and we have David Stern and his pathetic band of merry refs to thank for it back in the the 06 finals.  Wade is not a champion without a WHOLE LOT of help from the refs and other teammates.  Think the Mavs would win a title if you replaced Dirk with Wade and Wade didn't get the refs fluff his pillows?  HA!, his team wouldn't have made it to the playoffs.  WADE IS A DOOOOOOOOOOOSH

All players resort to dirty plays, large and small, from time to time. They all search for that psychological/physiological advantage.

The NBA loves this.  Good teams, bright stars, bad blood.  All is good entertainment until someone gets herpes...right ex-Mrs. Wade?

The teams just don't like each other so any time anyone touches somebody in a way that might be questionable things get tense.

Maybe when the league starts making players pay for injuries and lost time of players they cause harm to, we will see a cleaner game.

Punk move was also wade throwing Bibby's shoe into the stands last year during play.

Rondo's foul was acceptable.  Hard foul?  Not really.  Wade wasn't pulled to the ground, neither was he shoved from behind or knocked off his feet.  Rondo merely didn't allow Wade to get his arms up to release a shot.  Everyone knows how often Wade and LeBron get And-1s due to fouls not being hard enough, allowing them to complete their shooting motions and draw the foul.  Rondo didn't allow that to happen.  He wrapped him up around the shoulders - where the ball was - and then let go.

You want to see real "punk plays" and "dirty plays?"  Well, look no further than the whiner himself - Dwyane Wade.

The Rondo take down was a dirty play by Wade that could have resulted in nothing, but happened to end with Rondo's elbow being dislocated.  But, it's undeniable that he hooked Rondo and pulled him down on the ground.  Why?  Because Rondo poked the ball away and could have made a play on the loose ball.

Then, there's this one from late last season:

This is Wade blind-siding a defenseless Collison.  No play on the ball.  No remorse.  He actually goes to the ref to argue the Flagrant-1 call.  This foul was suspension-worthy.  Was Wade suspended?  Take a guess.  Why did Wade commit this egregious foul?  Because the Pacers had a fast break.

Wade is a sore loser and a poor winner.

Well Rondo did grab Wade's shoulder area so that is clearly not an intention to block or steal the ball. Wade might be dirty, maybe it is all the trash talkings between two players or two teams. But from the second clip, I do not see how Wade forced the foul to hurt Rondo's elbow. If it was the right elbow, sure I can see some contacts but left side looks clean to me. Just play the game... Charles Oakley will laught at you guys.

Love the name and the pic dude.  Seriously, Wade and Lebron have made a killing off the weak and-1 foul.  Rondo is a savvy player

@irfan aziz  @Cool there's something called aggressive and competitive play without being dirty, it's called sportsmanship.
