The NBA has suspended Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo for two games for his role in a shoving match with Nets power forward Kris Humphries that carried into the TD Garden stands on Wednesday night. The NBA has also fined Nets forward Gerald Wallace $35,000 and Celtics center Kevin Garnett $25,000 for “escalating the altercation.” Humphries was not fined or suspended.

Rondo will serve his suspension during a Friday game in Boston against the Blazers and a Saturday game against the Bucks in Milwaukee. He will be eligible to return next Wednesday against the Timberwolves in Boston.

Rondo shoved Humphries in the chest with both arms after he fouled Garnett in the neck area on a driving shot attempt. Celtics guard Jason Terry then joined the fray, as did Wallace. From there, the pile spilled into the seats, where shoving between multiple members of both teams continued.

Rondo, Humphries and Wallace were all ejected as a result of the skirmish. Garnett was assessed a technical foul.

Rondo’s ejection ended his streak of 10 or more assists at 37 games, tied with John Stockton for the second longest in NBA history and nine behind Magic Johnson’s record of 46 set in 1983-84. The Boston All-Star’s streak covered the last 24 games of the 2011-12 season and Boston’s first 13 games of this season.

Rondo did not speak with reporters after the game. He is averaging 12.9 points, 12.9 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals during the Celtics’ 8-7 start. He is on the books for $11 million this season.

Funny thing is Rondo was just wrong.  Humphries didn't do anything.  Next time Rondo, make sure it's not your guy taking a flop before you lose control.

I had NBA league pass and heard a Home Celtics game broadcast and thought I was being punk'd by the hennisons announcing.   He reminds me of yinzer fans of the steelers....a player does something to the celtics and its the worse play ever and the guy should be banished to hell...a celtic player turns around and does the same thing and gets called for the foul and they are hurting the game by not letting players play or be men.KG is very well known for punching players in the balls yet noone in the celtic organization has said anything about that.

Rondo is a great player no doubt and has a good basketball IQ but is just an idiot when it comes to the extra stuff like this

Whomever was announcing this game should be fired.

"I'll tell you, I want Rondo on my side. You hit my partner in the mouth when he's shooting the ball, you have to deal with me."

Encouraging Rondo's behavior as sticking up for your teammate is just stupid. The foul was not vicious in the least. It seemed accidental to me at least. Way to encourage those watching the game to start "sticking up" for teammates by getting in fights. Honestly that is more abhorrent to me than Rondo's behavior, and I am by no means in favor of his behavior either.

Metta World Peace was suspended forever and Rondo two games? I supposed some teams are more favoured than others. Celtic has always been treated as special, allowing Garnet to act like a street fighter on the court without repercussion. Their coach, Doc even encourage them

What a dumb play.  The suspension was warranted.

They are not goining to fire Tommy Heinsom. I am sure even he does not agree with brawling he was only referring to not allowing shots on a teammate like that

Get your head out of your butt man. Rondo got what he deserved. You can't even compare what he did to what Artest did. His "fight" was with another player and not the fans and no punches were thrown. I don't know if you were just watching the clip or the entire game but Humphries hit Garnett on his 2 previos trips up the court with no fouls called. As for the comment that Doc encouraged them you are way off base on that too. He said afterward that was unacceptable

@abrakola You are comparing this playground shoving match to Ron Peace and company going deep into the bleachers and brawling with fans?   Nice try.

@roderiques5898 Yes I was overreacting from when I first heard it. I am very involved in basketball via coaching a youth team and I would not want any of my kids to listen to what seemed to me an announcer promoting this behavior. I don't really want him fired either, losing a job is a big deal, but perhaps a correction of some sort would be appropriate.

@JoeCabot @abrakola Open your eyes bro. If Rondo is in Sacramento or Wasington, he will be toast. With all his trantron over the years, all he got is a slap in the wrist. Boy o boy. And Kevin??? A fine that means nothing to him? Talk about validating hulliganism......

What the hell is a 'trantron'??    Bro, Hey Bro, Yo Bro, Bro....if you want what you write to be taken seriously, you need to learn how to spell, do punctuation, etc... like you should've learned back in 1st grade.  You look and sound like an idiot when you write like one.  Bro.

Rondo shouldn't have done what he did, but two games for a shove is terrible.  How are the Celtics being treated as 'special', but Humphries, who blatantly started everything, gets away scot-free?  This is why the NBA is losing viewership, and why Daniel Stern leaving will be the best thing to happen to the NBA since it started.
