Knicks’ Smith hits buzzer-beating game-winner to top Bobcats
Knicks guard J.R. Smith hit a step-back, walk-off buzzer-beater over Michael Kidd-Gilchrist to defeat the Bobcats 100-98 at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte on Wednesday night.
New York set up a sideline inbounds play after Smith initially held up a transition opportunity to hold for the last shot. Knicks guard Jason Kidd furiously called for a timeout, which he received with 3.4 seconds remaining on the clock. After a timeout let coach Mike Woodson draw up a play, Smith sprang open at the top of the key after Raymond Felton cleared to the corner.
Kidd inbounded the ball to Smith, who immediately went to work one-one-on against Kidd-Gilchrist, the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. Smith took three dribbles to his left, milking the clock, before sliding into a step-back jumper just inside the three-point line. The ball went cleanly through the net just after the buzzer sounded, giving New York the two-point victory.
Knicks All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony was not involved on the final possession after leaving the game earlier with a left middle finger laceration.
Smith finished with 13 points on 6-for-16 shooting in 32 minutes on the night.
