Lakers’ D’Antoni lashes out at reporter after road loss to Cavaliers

Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni lost his patience with a reporter after a 100-94 loss to the Cavaliers on Tuesday in Cleveland.

After the Lakers lost their third consecutive game to fall to 9-13 overall and 2-7 on the road, D’Antoni was asked about his team’s porous defense, which has been a problem throughout the season. He responded in an irritated fashion, raising his voice to dispute the reporter’s line of questioning, which centered on the premise that the Lakers only watched film and practiced shooting and didn’t address their defense in preparing for the Cavaliers.

“I didn’t see you in the film … I didn’t see you there. It’s not true.”

Did you work on defense?

“Hell yeah, we worked for a half-hour on it. You’re starting to piss me off. You’re starting to piss me off because you’re saying something that’s not factually correct. I’m just saying, I’m just straightening it out.”

The Lakers came into the game ranked No. 15 in defensive efficiency. They have conceded at least 100 points in six of the last seven games. Cleveland had the 27th-ranked offense, although star guard Kyrie Irving played Tuesday after missing weeks with a hand injury. Irving finished with 28 points and 11 assists as the Cavaliers overcame Kobe Bryant’s 42 points.

D’Antoni, long known as an offensive mastermind, has been accused in the past of neglecting the importance of defense in favor of his high-octane approach.

The Orange County Register reports that D’Antoni continued to defend his coaching of defense after the incident shown in the video clip above.

D’Antoni went to the timeline of when the Lakers worked on defense in recent days and also said: “We work on defense all the time.”

One of the problems with the lakers is the fact that players like Antawn Jamison and Metta World Peace get more shots than Howard.  HOW do you expect to win when your (arguably) most important player gets less shots than a guy off the bench?

As for the defense...  What do you expect?  The only real plus defenders on your roster are Howard and Hill.  Kobe is a good defender but in recent years he has slipped on that end a LOT.  Same with World Peace.  Sad to say but those two mostly gewt by on reputation on the defense end now.  They are both capable of great defense but they have to pick their spots now instead of doing it for 48 minutes like they did when they were younger.  Gasol will help when he is back and healthy but not enough to get their defense into contender status.

Jim Buss is the problem.

Let' face facts.    Cocaine does damage to the brain.   Ask any doctor.

Jim Buss is not capable of being entrusted with the billion dollar jewel the NBA.

He is not smart enough.

WHO would have HOWARD on their team and become a primary 3 point shooting team.

They worked a half hour on defense lol? Thats the most defense D'Antoni has coached in his life, i love my lakers but come on its getting embarrassing, 5 GAMES under .500

The "defensive efficiency" thing is a bit overblown. When Gasol is in there with Howard, MWP, and Kobe they have one of the best, if not the best half court defenses in the game. Teams have to work so hard just to get a shot off. But right now they turn the ball over WAY too much to even be a competitor, let alone a contender. There is no defense against turnovers and fast breaks. That's why it seems foolish to make conclusions about this Laker team without Nash comfortably running the offense.

@Aaron14 Nash is a terrible defender. They may scor emore with him out there, but there defense becomes worse.

@nervechainI'm not so sure that Nash is a worst defender than Duhon. Besides the point of the statement is that cleaning up the sloppy play on offense will lead to a higher "defensive efficiency"

Phil's coming back and all will be well....not fair to Mike, but this idiot move is on Jim Buss...THE REAL PROBLEM WITH THE LAKERS

@TomPowers They could've had Phil originally.  But he's not going to save them now, not after how they treated him before hiring D'Antoni.

oh my,so long as the lakers bench won't improve, l.a. is in deep trouble, kobe and dwight are the only consistent players for this team, the rest is just fluctuating, oh wait, even dwight is on and off.

Too bad all you armchair Einsteins aren't coaching and running the Lakers. With your genius and insight, they'd never lose a game and they'd never have to get pissed off at obnoxious reporters.

@John NoLastName I'm glad you realize your limitations and accept that some people have more common sense than others. It really isn't about us being smart...it doesn't take much talent to see that teams are running over the Lakers. Now, if your offense is the type that facilitates this...then you are setting yourself to more losses than wins by continuing to deny it. Defense is about being smart. You can't get from Point A to Point B if you are focusing only on half the game. D'Antoni has a history of continuing to do the same thing over and over even though it keeps failing. If he was smart, he would use the talent the Lakers have, which is a lot, in a manner that yields wins. When Kobe scores 30 pts or more, the Lakers are 1-10. Period. End of story. They need to slow the game down, work a half court game, and control the momentum. They do not have the talent to run up and down the court.

They would be better with Nash and Gasol in there, but they're never going to be a championship contender with D'Antoni.  Does anyone really think they would be losing like this if Phil Jackson were on the bench?  D'Antoni is out of his depth here.  Buss blew it.

He said they worked on it a "half-hour." At least that's double the time they spent on it combined the previous week. Must start somewhere.

of course. reporters and viewers are obviously better at coaching than the man getting payed millions.

If you have been "working on defense all the time", then you are working on it wrong. But why would you expect a coach to know that?
