Timberwolves fans welcome back Rubio with standing ovation
By Ben Golliver
Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio returned from knee surgery during a Saturday night game against the Mavericks at the Target Center, getting a standing ovation from the home crowd when he checked into the game late in the first quarter.
Coach Rick Adelman started Luke Ridnour and Alexey Shved, electing to bring Rubio into the game with a little less than two minutes remaining in the opening period. A loud cheer went up immediately when Rubio went to the scorer’s table and the crowd began chanting his name loudly as he waited to enter the game.
Saturday represented Rubio’s first action in more than nine months after he tore the ACL in his left knee during a March game against the Lakers. The Timberwolves announced Saturday morning that he was set to make his return against the Mavericks a little more than two weeks after he was cleared for full-contact practices.
Rubio wasted little time making his mark, threading a pass through his legs to center Greg Stiemsma, leaving Mavericks forward Elton Brand helpless. Click through for an animation.
