Reports: Hawks agree to trade Anthony Morrow to Mavericks for Dahntay Jones
By Ben Golliver
Morrow, 27, averaged 5.2 points and 1.1 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game in 24 appearances for the Hawks this season. He missed a stretch of this season with a hip injury. Morrow was acquired by Atlanta from Brooklyn as part of a package for Joe Johnson. He’s in the final year of a three-year contract that pays him $4 million this season.
Known primarily as a long-distance sharpshooter, Morrow should get a greater opportunity in Dallas than he had in Atlanta, where he was buried in a fairly deep backcourt rotation. The Mavericks have limited contract commitments past this season so the balance of their 2012-13 season, which will likely end in the lottery, amounts to an open tryout for future years.
Jones, 32, averaged 3.5 points and 1.4 rebounds in 12.7 minutes per game in 50 appearances for the Mavericks this season. He was acquired by Dallas from Indiana in a July 2012 trade. He’s in the final season of a four-year contract that pays him $2.9 million.
The Hawks add the defensive-minded Jones as they approach the playoffs and save a pro-rated portion of the $1.1 million difference between the two players’ salaries.
