Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins ejected after flagrant elbow to Bucks’ Mike Dunleavy
By Ben Golliver
Kings center DeMarcus Cousins was assessed a flagrant foul 2 and ejected for an elbow to Bucks forward Mike Dunleavy during Milwaukee’s 115-113 win at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento on Sunday night.
With 3:26 remaining in the third quarter and the Bucks leading 76-67, Cousins elbowed Dunleavy in the back of the head, earning an automatic ejection. Cousins and Dunleavy were also assessed double technical fouls prior to Cousins’ ejection, after Dunleavy appeared to undercut Cousins as he battled for position on a Marcus Thornton drive.
The flagrant foul 2 designation applies to fouls that are deemed both “unnecessary and excessive.” All flagrant fouls are reviewed by the NBA league office and are subject to possible discipline including a fine and/or suspension.
Cousins departed with 24 points (on 10-for-12 shooting) and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes.
The Sacramento Bee reported that Dunleavy was bewildered by Cousins’ play.
“I’m not even going to begin to reason with someone like that. I don’t know where to begin. I don’t even know what happened the first time around. I thought I was just trying to box him out, a bunch of bodies fell and collapsed and there was a timeout. Next thing you know he starts barking at me. We try to run a play and he elbows me in the head. I don’t know.”
“He came up to me and got in my face about stuff. And we’re here to play basketball and this guy’s got other stuff going on, obviously.”
It’s no easy task keeping track of Cousins’ laundry list of rule violations.
Sunday marked Cousins’ fourth ejection of the 2012-13 season. He was ejected from a November game for drawing two technical fouls after slapping the ball and disputing a call, from a January game against the Mavericks for a flagrant foul 2 on Vince Carter, and from a February game for a verbal argument with the referees during halftime.
In addition, Cousins has accumulated 12 technical fouls. He will receive a one-game suspension if and when he reaches 16 technicals on the season.
Cousins has also been suspended a total of three times by the NBA and the Kings this season. He was suspended for two games by the NBA for a post-game confrontation with Spurs television broadcaster Sean Elliott one game in November. He was suspended for one game by the NBA for a low blow on Mavericks guard O.J. Mayo back in December. He was suspended indefinitely by the Kings for an in-game argument with coach Keith Smart but the suspension was officially lifted after one game, although Smart didn’t allow him to immediately rejoin the team.
