Kobe Bryant had surgery on Saturday to repair a torn Achilles tendon in his left leg and is expected to miss six to nine months, the Lakers announced.

Athletic trainer Gary Vitti told reporters that Bryant’s surgery was to repair the “third-degree rupture” and that “the plan” is for the star guard to return for the start of the 2013-14 season. If Bryant returns in six months, he could potentially be available for the Lakers’ regular-season opener, usually set in late October. If his recuperation extends to nine months, Bryant would return in January. The 15-time All-Star is set to make $30.5 million next season in the final year of his contract.

Bryant, 34, left Friday’s victory over Golden State after falling to the court in the fourth quarter while attempting to drive to his left past Harrison Barnes. Bryant walked off the court under his own power but moved gingerly. He departed with 3:06 remaining in the fourth quarter after making two free throws and did not return, finishing with 34 points (on 9-for-21 shooting), five rebounds and four assists in 45 minutes.

After the game, Bryant was open about the extent of the injury, even though the Lakers initially listed it as a “probable” tear.

“I made a move I’ve made a million times and it popped,” Bryant said, calling the injury “by far” the biggest disappointment of his career.

The 17-year veteran also posted a message on his @KobeBryant Twitter account.

“Random tears of devastation and doubt mixed with inner determination and will,” he wrote Friday night.

He added a lengthy message on Facebook, excerpted here.

This is such BS! All the training and sacrifice just flew out the window with one step that I’ve done millions of times! The frustration is unbearable. The anger is rage. Why the hell did this happen ?!? Makes no damn sense. Now I’m supposed to come back from this and be the same player or better at 35?!? How in the world am I supposed to do that?? I have NO CLUE. Do I have the consistent will to overcome this thing?

Maybe I should break out the rocking chair and reminisce on the career that was. Maybe this is how my book ends. Maybe Father Time has defeated me…Then again maybe not! It’s 3:30am, my foot feels like dead weight, my head is spinning from the pain meds and I’m wide awake.

Feels good to vent, let it out. To feel as if THIS is the WORST thing EVER! Because After ALL the venting, a real perspective sets in. There are far greater issues/challenges in the world then a torn achilles. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, find the silver lining and get to work with the same belief, same drive and same conviction as ever. One day, the beginning of a new career journey will commence. Today is NOT that day.

On Saturday, Bryant posted a photo of himself to Instagram as he prepared for surgery.

L.A. improved to 43-37 with the win and maintained a one-game lead over Utah for the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference. The Lakers have just two games remaining in the regular season, against the Spurs on Sunday and the Rockets on Wednesday.

"I made a move I've made a million times".  Maybe THAT sentiment explains more than it should; he's been [playing too many minutes trying to back-up that playoff guarantee he made a few weeks ago, but that's why Kobe is Kobe.  I hate the Lakers, love the Nuggets, but I don't want to see guys go out like this.  He at least deserves a respectable, dignified exit from the league, if that's what this truly is. I was working late at DISH the other night but caught the last part of the game on my iPad riding the bus home.  I have DISH Anywhere, the app that lets you take your TV and DVR with you on the go.  I was excited to watch live, but this injury sure killed the mood.  I don't root for him but wish Mamba the best of luck in his recovery.

Watching kobe is like watching a 5 year old throw a temper tantrum.  If he misses a shot, he gets angry and fouls the opposing player, or he complains to the refs that it was a foul.  kobe represents everything wrong with the NBA and commercialized basketball:  namely too much whistle blowing.

Anyway, it will be nice not having to hear about him constantly.  hopefully commentators don't bring him up too much as a "legend" and what not.  "This is such BS!"?  "The anger is rage".   Who says that about an injury.  A narcissist that's who.

it sucks for people who can only comment negative on someone who has made basketball fun, competitive and worked hard day in and out for over 17 years. The fact that this guy is a super star and actually has nothing to prove to anybody in his twilight years, he is still worried about basketball, playoffs, championship, his team just shows the passion he has and the champion he is. so stop making ridiculous comments like rape or what not cauz firstly its not related and secondly who in the world are we to judge anybody,im sure when we do our own audit, alot of people here will fail miserably. btw im just a pistons fan but appreciate kobe for the player he has been and can only wish him a speedy recovery and hope hes back with ample rest and dedication the next season cauz basketball needs players with such pride, passion and commitment.

Win 2 for Jerry.

After all that Dr. Jerry bus has done for the NBA, his last year can't miss the playoffs.

Win 2 for Jerry. -- Pass it on.

At 34 Kobe is a typical candidate for Achilles rupture. The classic patient is a male in his 30's playing a sport with need to quickly accelerate, jump or sprint. See a family physician and basketball fan's blog post on how to tell if you have an achilles tendon rupture and the latest on treatment options. http://drpullen.com/achillestendonrupture

If the Lakers are smart they will send Bryant to a rehab clinic with an all male staff. And he should still be in prison for rape. It is sad that some people confuse the ability to dribble and shoot a basketball with an accomplishment worthy of note.

Hey, could be worse bro...at least your leg didn't snap in half.

It's odd. I've never been a real big Kobe fan, but the honesty of his anger in the tweets he made after this injury has made me really appreciate him. It makes him more human to me. Maybe it seems unfair of me, but I couldn't help getting a little bored with all the press he always got.

And, Ron, you're exactly right. What a  year it's been. There is an old Chinese curse that goes,' May you live in interesting times'. It's been a VERY interesting year for the Lakers.

This is the result of one man trying to carry a whole team all season.  On top of that, his legs have an extreme amount of mileage on them, the result of previous success.  While his body is young in years, when year after you go to play-offs, often deep, and7 of those times you go into the finals, that means that body has gotten the mileage of an older player.  Then comes this worst season when he has tried to will this team out of its horrid position.   That's putting much more strain on those legs than any other season, and that comes at a vulnerable time for this body.  There is little doubt in my mind this injury happened because of the extreme wear-and-tear.  It is possible it was a freak accident that might have happened even if it was his rookie season but the likelihood that it was wear and tear is much much greater.  I'm sorry this happened to him this way.  I hope it inspires this bad Lakers team to be more than the extreme underachievers they have been this year.

What a bad year... They lose Jerry Buss, and every single starter experiences a major injury: Howard tears labrum. Gasol tears muscle in foot.  Nash breaks foot.  World Peace tears miniscus.  Kobe tears achilles.  Jordan Hill has season ending hip injury.  What an awful season.

Kobe - here's a thought:  Other than basketball, what can you do?

Rape victim counselor?  Coaching?

Could it be that your life is soon to be completely worthless?  Isn't it already?

@WilyCoyoteSuperGenius well said, the massive herds of the USA for bizarre reasons worship this person, a person who is a thug and also a person that would not give two shots about what they think or what I think for that matter.  i enjoy sports and played many many sports in high school and at college, but sports at the professional level is intended to be simple entertainment, i only want to be entertained by people i believe have demonstrated some basic decent behavior.  kobe failed that test.

@John4 snther hater, just cuz he has more in life then you ,, his life had a mark on basketball and you had nothing, so sad

tfaw
tfaw

@John4 agree.  the thug needs to retire soon.  wonder if he got a tax deduction for the huge settlement he made to the victim ?  i don't hate kobe, he is clearly not even worthy of my hate.  i just want him to quit so i can go back and be the Laker fan that I once was.  the herds are so shallow they would applaud people that murder as long as the person could play a game well.

@tfaw @WilyCoyoteSuperGenius I watch basketball to watch players play the game. i don't give a rats balls what he (or any of the players) do outside of the court. he plays the game hard and plays like a champion every night, something most of the "pure", angel players that you'd rather watch NEVER do while they collect their millions. who's the crook? the guy who earns his money or the pretenders?

John4
John4

@tfaw I agree with everything you said.  The once classy Lakers are now stuck with this rapist as the face of the franchise and everyone pretends it's acceptable.  He should be in jail.  The victim went for the payout, and then decided against testifying in court.  Sad, but does not change the fact that Kobe is a rapist.  No huge piece of jewelry for his wife changes that either.

John4
John4

@Sarah3 Raped.  Actually, she got raped, then took the money instead of testifying against him in court.

John4
John4

@StinkySunny And I have never been accused of rape.  I never had a victim change her mind at the last minute (after a payout was clearly paid) either.  And let's be very clear:  my life is infinitely more valuable than that of the rapist.  No contest.

John116
John116

@SukeMadiq @John116 @stockwatch  We do not what happened ! That young lady went to Kobe room for the express idea of  a payday Kobe showed bad judgement but he not a rapist. She got exactly what she went to his room for he did seek her out. You people rally need to focus on the future and let the past go.

tfaw
tfaw

@ITATTRACTS @tfaw @WilyCoyoteSuperGenius i prefer to watch my son's high school games or college.  i would hardly call kobe a chamption.  lastly, i never said that other players were angels.  last time i checked this conversation was about kobe the rapist, not other people in the league,  but if using that argument makes you feel better, i get that.

tfaw
tfaw

@Sarah3 factually incorrect about most of your statements. your trust in kobe is insane by most definitions.

tfaw
tfaw

@ITATTRACTS @tfaw @Sick of you @John4 you have never had a relative raped or you are a fool.  with the high profile nature of the matter, and kobe's high price lawyers, the trial would have dragged out for months and she would have been further damaged.  as for the comment that she is as guilty as kobe all i can say i hope one day kobe forces his way with your wife, mom or daughter; lets see how you react then.

Sarah3
Sarah3

So if she was indeed raped then why was she bragging about sleeping with Kobe to friends the day after? Also she had slept with multiple guys and had 6 different types of semen in her when she was examined. Do you really think she was raped? Does kobe really have to rape anyone... I mean there are millions of women that would have sex with him willingly... She just wanted money and that's what she got. You people should be ashamed for what you are doing. I can also tell you that rape is a forced sexual encounter, not regret after the fact.. When your eyes sees a payday!!!

The_Lau
The_Lau

@tfaw @Sick of you @John4  Fact: OJ did not murder anyone. It was his son Jason, or a serial killer named Glen Rogers.

And Kobe did not rape anyone. He had consensual sex with a promiscuous young woman outside his marriage.

Kobe Bryant is better than all human beings. Kobe Bryant is a God. 5x Champion baby!

ITATTRACTS

@tfaw @Sick of you @John4 if you're the victim of a crime and you take a payout to keep your mouth shut, you are equally as criminal as the one who violated you. no sympathy for a person who chooses the cash over her own self respect.

tfaw
tfaw

@Sick of you @John4 @tfaw so you probably think OJ is innocent because no one was around to see it.  your logic is that of a two year-old.  there was plenty of evidence and DNA; just go back to the case.  and yes, i have not raped any people and i have never committed a crime, like kobe.  i am a far better human being than kobe as well.

i live in full transparency - you on the other hand worship false idols and thugs.  hardly worth defending, but hey if that is how you roll, by all means.  i opt for higher ground and just have better expectations.

Sick of you
Sick of you

@John4 @tfaw  So I guess you thugs were in the room when this happened.  Judge and jury both of you.  With your self-righteousness (and I put the emphasis on "self") I bet you have done NOTHING for which you need forgiveness.  The operative word is "accused".  If she could tell which semen was which on those dirty panties maybe she would have gone to trial.  She took the easy cash way out and not been revealed for what she was.  tfaw - the Lakers don't fans like you - I'm sure they miss you coming in the door.  Take your judgmental behinds back under the rock you came from.

@John4 @Sarah3 no she said she was raped ,, and anted money to go away , she said she  never take money, but she did.

Sarah3

Where is your proof of this? The only 2 people that will ever really know is two of them. I am curious why you think he would rape some girl when he has prolly 100 groupies a night lining up for him. Her friends even testified that she was bragging about sleeping with Kobe after that night. Also if she was raped why on earth would she so easily accept buyout? The reason is because that's all she wanted was money. Why do you think she filed a civil lawsuit against him...to get money!!! Also rape is all about power... And in over 17 years how many times has kobe been in the media for criminal acts??? If you

Rape and get away with it you will rape again... Just like once a Cheeter always a Cheeter. I am not saying that he is a perfect person... Nobody is but to get on a online forum and say that he is guilty of rape when he was clearly not prosecuted and the so called victim herself was caught bragging about how she had sex with Kobe in itself is enough doubt for anyone. Even if it would have went to trial he would not have been prosecuted due to the statements that were made and due to the lack of evidence. I have reviewed the case very carefully and it's all public record so go look for yourself and see what you find. All I ask is that you to be truthful with yourself and not allow your personal hatred of Kobe to jade your findings

@John4 @StinkySunny well here you go ,, just like kobe,s was , i say that you raped, now , is it true, will you pay me to go away ,, will i write songs about it ?
