Video: Celtics, Knicks exchange words after Game 5
The Celtics walked out of Madison Square Garden with a Game 5 win and they let the Knicks know all about it on their way off the court.
After Boston beat New York 92-86 to force a Game 6 on Friday, Celtics guard Jordan Crawford directed some animated trash talk at Carmelo Anthony as the two teams passed each other at midcourt. The words prompted Raymond Felton to stand up for Anthony, and a number of players and coaches had to intervene to separate the verbal exchange, which also included some minor shoving. The scene ended humorously when Celtics coach Doc Rivers directed Fab Melo to leave the court by pointing to the locker room.
“I’m not thinking about no Jordan Crawford,” Anthony said after the game, according to the New York Times. “I don’t even think he deserves for you to be typing right now.”
Anthony finished with a game-high 22 points (on eight-for-24 shooting), seven rebounds and two assists in 45 minutes. Crawford received a DNP-CD.
The Knicks now lead the Eastern Conference first-round series 3-2 after failing to close out the Celtics on Wednesday. The post-game exchange occurred in the wake of some pre-game banter, which involved Kenyon Martin telling his Knicks teammates to dress in all black for the Celtics’ funeral and J.R. Smith pretending not to know Jason Terry after earning an ejection and suspension for elbowing him.
“I’m a 14-year veteran,” Terry said in a post-game interview, after scoring 17 points off the bench. “If you don’t know who I am, you will after the series is over.”
Smith also admitted the trash talking hadn’t come to fruition.
“Well, we was going to a funeral, but it looks like we got buried,” he said, according to the Associated Press. “Basketball is a very humbling game.”
Rumors suggested that the trash talk directed at Anthony by Crawford concerned his wife, actress La La Vasquez.
“Try again,” she wrote on Instagram, apparently in Crawford’s direction. “You on the bench for a reason.”
The bad blood between these two teams has been a consistent them all season. Anthony was suspended earlier this season for a post-game confrontation with Celtics forward/center Kevin Garnett.
