Will the Charlotte Hornets bring back the purple, teal and white uniforms?

The Bobcats are turning back the clock, dropping the Bobcats nickname for the Hornets, but the status of the iconic Hornets’ colors (purple, teal and white) is still up in the air.

Owner Michael Jordan wouldn’t confirm what colors the new Hornets would adopt, but the designer of the original Hornets uniforms is hoping to reintroduce them to a willing public (via NBC Charlotte):

Alexander Julian told [NBC Charlotte] that story by phone Tuesday, and if anyone knows about the teal and purple, it’s him. He came up with the combination, and the original Hornets uniforms that featured it. “I brought that combination to the public,” he said.

There’s one [color] that he really likes — teal. It’s a color that just looks good on everybody, he said. Add purple, and you’ve got a combination that’s held up for more than 25 years. Julian calls them his signature colors. They’re the ones he used when Shinn asked him to create the uniforms for Charlotte’s new NBA franchise.

He’s still pleased that even after a quarter-century, the Hornets style is still popular and the teal and purple haven’t gone away. “It was a great honor [to design the original uniforms],” he said. “I’d love another shot at it.”

The article also notes that, by 1995, the Hornets were selling “more jerseys than any other NBA team, despite the fact that they would never make it past the second round of the playoffs.”

Bringing back the original colors would seem to be a strong move for a team looking to reconnect with its fan base. The original Hornets joined the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1988 and spent 14 seasons in Charlotte before being moved to New Orleans by former owner George Shinn in 2002. (The New Orleans Hornets officially changed their name to the New Orleans Pelicans in April.) For what it’s worth, the BackBuzzCity site used to promote the Hornets’ return to Charlotte uses the purple, teal and white colors.

The Bobcats have cycled through four uniforms since entering the NBA in 2004, starting with an orange/red color scheme and moving to a predominantly navy blue look.

The NBC Charlotte article includes an awesome video of the original Charlotte Hornets uniform unveiling that we just had to share. Enjoy:

I like the idea of UNC Blue instead of Teal. they used it in the Buzz is Back flyer and it looks kinda cool

Keep the colors muted teal/ deep purple. Update the logo and unis. Keep Hugo but leave him out of the primary logo.

I think they should roll with the old colors/logo/uniforms for the first year as a "Welcome back, Hornets" type deal and then update them the second year.

I was a basketball fan; I was a Charlotte Hornets fan; I attended Charlotte Hornets home games at the Charlotte Coliseum. I lost all interest in basketball after the Hornets left Charlotte. This would make me want to be interested in basketball again. However, if they do not look like the Charlotte Hornets of my memory, I won't be interested.

Returning to the greatness of the Hornets. But in all seriousness, those were sweet uniforms. And I have never seen anybody ever sporting any Bobcats gear.

I'd go with black and red . . . nobody uses those colors.

Who cares? They could play naked and no one would notice. Awful team, awful owner.

@Scallywagners except for the Bulls, Blazers, Heat, and Raptors to a degree. Otherwise you're spot on!

@Scallywagners NBA doesn't like teams using black, they got pissed at the Nets for it. It's most teams 3rd jersey and a good seller as a specialty style one - Teal & Purple jerseys were awesome. BRING BACK THE HORNETS! BRING BACK THE HORNETS! BRING BACK THE HORNETS!

@JasonMacBride Basketball fans care, you jerk. You cared enough to comment on male athletes playing naked.

@WCoastPro No real basketball fan cares about the Hornets, or your obvious anger management problem.

@JasonMacBride @WCoastPro Oh yes Jason tell us about what makes real basketball fans! We can't possibly hold a candle to you. I'm sure you'll achieve more fame and fortune than any member of the Hornets past or present. We should be paying to hear your opinions!

and I must be a fake  for following a team for 25 years! That nobody cares about except for all the NBA fans in the world and citizens of Charlotte, NC.

@JasonMacBride @WCoastPro I live on the East Coast of Canada and genuinely care about the Hornets. You gotta have a soft spot for any team that struggles that much... Not to mention most fans would know them from the draft lottery!

@JoeCabot @JasonMacBride The fact is that probably 99.9% of Americans are not aware that an NBA team by the name of the Charlotte Bobcats exists.

@JasonMacBride Folks in NC know a bit about hoops and 15,000+ attended each Bobcats game during the past season.  You can rant about the quality of the organization all you wish, but facts is facts.
