A deal that would have sent Kevin Garnett and Doc Rivers from the Celtics to the Clippers is “dead,” a fact first reported by the Los Angeles Times‘ Brad Turner and confirmed by Danny Ainge to the Boston Globe.

The deal reportedly would have netted the Clippers Garnett and Rivers in exchange for DeAndre Jordan and first-round picks. Rivers would have replaced Vinny Del Negro, who was not retained by the Clippers even though he lead Los Angeles to its best season in franchise history.

“The talks broke down Tuesday morning when the Clippers ‘refused to budge’ on Boston’s latest proposal that asked for DeAndre Jordan, straight up for Garnett, and two first-round draft picks,” reports ESPN.com’s Ramona Shelburne. “The teams have no plans to speak again, the sources said, and the Clippers are preparing to move on and hire a coach this week.”

USAToday Sports’ Sam Amick also notes that the Clippers are ready to move on with their coaching search, noting that the team is “set to interview former New Orleans and Cleveland coach Byron Scott today and Indiana Pacers assistant Brian Shaw on Wednesday. Former Memphis coach Lionel Hollins is also in the running for the job.”

Rivers has three years remaining on his deal in Boston, but sources close to the coach have suggested it might be “time for a change.”

Garnett, 37, averaged 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 2012-13. He has two years and more than $24 million remaining on his deal with the Celtics, but the last year of his contract is not fully guaranteed. The Clippers’ interest in Garnett dates back to the February trade deadline.

Next year is KGs last. Alot of big names are gonna sign in Boston this offseason, A healthy Rondo and another good big man and they'll be right back in the picture next year. JR Smith and Igoudala are 2 possibilities

Good, Jordan is a stiff and not worth 10 million a year.

Just like Chad Eight Five did not do 30 days, I will bet a week's pay that Rivers will not finish his contract (3 years remaining) in Boston.  Why does any of this matter?  Because the Celtics could have gotten a first round pick for the pair, and got greedy.   That's too bad for Celtics' fans, as they certainly know the roster is in dire need of upgrading.

Good job, Celtics.  You kept KG who will play one or two more seasons, tops (probably one) and you kept your HC who does not want to be there.  You could have sent them to LA and picked up a first round pick in the draft, which the Celtics badly need.  Then certainly the Celtics will try to trade KG at the trade deadline, and get nowhere near the value the Clippers offered.  Sometimes guys like Danny Ainge can be penny wise and pound foolish.  This, clearly is one of those times.

Garnett's reaction to the trade talks was priceless! When approached by reporters requesting a comment about the trade to the Clippers, Garnett knew nothing about it. It turns out, that they do not have television in the retirement community where Garnett lives...

I wonder how Deandre will respond to the fact they really wanted to trade him but couldn't...

Somebody wants the "Doc" to sit on the bench for the next 3 years as punishment for NOT living up to his contract. OH WELL, there's always TV.......HA!

Watch out for the Celtics next year man, the time is now for the Celtics. Last year they almost took out the heat, do you remember that? JR smith and Andre Igoudala are free agents, 2 pick-ups that definetly could happen for Boston. Who wouldn't want to play with KG?(next year is his last year btw) and Doc is either coaching the Celtics or retiring get your facts straight. A healthy Rondo and a big shooter/ rebounder signing and I WILL bet you 1 week pay that this team will be in-tact and deep into the playoffs next year. No David Stern = no rings for the Heat

@John4 Maybe the Celtics didn't want a center who can't shoot and can't play defense and pay him $11 million a year.

He'll respond by shooting 30% on free throws instead of 38% like he did this season.

@Adam Paterson Adam - with all due respect, if you look at what I have said about KG, I have frequently noted that he has one or two years left, and have also said that it is more likely one.  As far as Rivers, I do think he wants to continue coaching in the NBA, but is looking for a change of scenery.  (Also, this is common for NBA coaches).    No "hate" of the Celtics at all.  Just my opinion.  Note that it is very unlikely that both KG and PP return to the Celtics for the upcoming season.  Change can be healthy and is normal for the NBA.  Peace.

@Travis6 Travis - the offer on the table from the Clippers was their first round pick for the Celtics' HC (who does not want to be in Boston) and KG (who has one or two years left, likley one).  At that point the Celtics tried to get two first round picks, and two players, including DeAndre Jordan.   The Clippers did not offer Jordan, the Celtics asked for him as part of the trade package.

Forget about all that.  Do YOU think the Clippers' first round pick for KG and Rivers is a good trade for the Celtics?  If not, why not?

@Rob C1 No, several NBA first round picks after the top five are good quality pick.  Players taken after top 5 frequently have been career starters and All Star type players. Look at the past dozen or so drafts before making such a statement.

This isn't the NFL. A first round pick out of the top five is next to worthless. The Clips got greedy in this one. They should have given up Bledsoe or taken Terry and Lee.

@JoeCabot @Wisconsin Death Trip I was referring to the   point that IF HE leaves Boston.....ect. Danny Ainge has the right to FORCE Rivers to sit for 3 years if he wants too. THUS, the Doc could join the TV jocks on TNT....etc.

@Wisconsin Death Trip He has not quit, retired, resigned, or walked away.  He has been the subject of trade rumors.  How can you twist that to mean that Doc Rivers is not fulfilling his contract?
