Just the two of us, we can make it if we try.

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant posted a photo of himself and longtime teammate Pau Gasol on Instagram shortly after free-agent Dwight Howard confirmed that he was leaving the Lakers to sign with the Rockets.

The picture, which shows Gasol patting Bryant on the head, bears the caption “#vamos #juntos #lakercorazon #vino.” The Spanish words translate to “we go, together, Laker heart, wine.”

“Vino” is one of Bryant’s numerous nicknames, a nod to how he is aging well. Gasol, of course, is a native of Spain.

Bryant, 34, was acquired by the Lakers in the 1996 draft. The leading scorer in franchise history, Bryant has won five titles in L.A.

Gasol, 32, was acquired by the Lakers in a 2008 trade with the Grizzlies. Together, Bryant and Gasol won back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010.

Howard, 27, was acquired by the Lakers in a 2012 trade with the Magic. He averaged 17.1 points, 12.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks last season. The Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Spurs after Bryant suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.

“I’ve decided to become a member of the Houston Rockets,” Howard wrote in a Twitter post. “I feel it’s the best place for me and I am excited about joining the Rockets and I’m looking forward to a great season. I want to thank the fans in Los Angeles and wish them the best.”

Both Bryant and Gasol will enter the final season of their respective contracts in 2013-14. Bryant is set to make $30.5 million while Gasol will earn $19.3 million.

“We have been informed of Dwight’s decision to not return to the Lakers,” Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak said in a statement. “Naturally we’re disappointed. However, we will now move forward in a different direction with the future of the franchise and, as always, will do our best to build the best team possible, one our great Lakers fans will be proud to support.”

I got it. The reason Kobe feels he can play for the next 3-4 years because he is not chasing MJ 6 rings. Kobe is a realist, the Lakers salary cap and age will not be competing for championships with Kobe on the roster. He should know the top tier teams all improved. Kobe believe as long as he can average 14-16 points per game, he can become the all time scoring leader. Sorry Kobe, Kareem Abdul Jabbar's record is sacred. The fans are not rooting for this, Laker fans root for team championships not for individual historical legacies of one player.

People talking about Kobe caring more about scoring than winning a championship are insane.  KObe has a chance to win ring number 6 u think he give a f about scoring 100 points. he does care abotu his teamates showing the same passion and will as he brings to the game. kobe wont go to a team where superstars are in place, like you King.

Bryant is the poster boy for self-centered athletes.  Case in point, telling Howard, "I can teach you how to win".  Congrats, knucklehead, you're part of the reason he's now a Rocket.  Stew in your own juice ya friggin' loser.  Can't wait to see the Lakers under .500 next year.

Here we go again... Kobe says "Just the two of us, we can make it if we try."  Uhhh... Isn't there more than just two people on a basketball team?  This is just why Kobe will never ever be close to anywhere that Jordan was. Kobe always thinks of himself first. This is why I can't stand Kobe! He could have been great but he's never learned to think of himself as part of a team.

why didn't the bean just buy D12 a $12mil ring like he did w/his wife to keep her around ?

Buss should learn from watching Ainge rebuild

6marK6

The reality is that there are no championships left in this team, has't been any for a few years now. An intelligent owner/GM would have started the process of rebuilding two years ago. But now they keep trying to slap a makeshift lineup around an aging superstar, dreaming about potential free agents down the road. Can anybody say Dallas Mavericks?

Oden is worth a shot. Patience for Lakers fans. Have no choice. Phil Jackson....no doubt

AndyLazarescu
AndyLazarescu

hahah, dwight is gone, whatever. the solution is simple: sign greg oden for a minimum salary, give him limited minutes to share with jordan. pau should stay and in this way the center and pf positions are covered. if pressure is not put on oden from the very beginning, i think the guy will explode. get phil jackson back, and he'll make oden an all-star. oden is hungry, has to prove he is not a bust, has loads of talents and is cheap. should oden really be a bust, then we will have a lot of cap space next summer. the lakers cannot loose if they take this gamble.

DavidMiguelSalvat
DavidMiguelSalvat

The problem to me is cap space. The Lakers played well towards the end of the regular season and the key was Gasols and Howards chemistry not to mentions Gasols over all play. The Lakers looked like a good team when Gasol was the facillitator /playmaker.Howard is a great individual player but a mediocre team player. Too much focus this year on keeping Howard and trading Gasol.

Mr j obviously u have no clue,Kobe didnt rape anybody. If anybody isnt winning a title its howard. He sucks. Only thing he can do is dunk and cry about hid shoulder. Kobe 5 rings. Howard 0. Dig that sucka

Don't be surprised Laker fans if Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak both decide to sign Greg Ogden. They're so incapable of making smart choices!

Kobe is going to go off on Houston. 100 point game? I'd laugh if it happened.

Kobe has openly mocked Gasol many times over the years now he's Kobe's ride or die buddy. This guy is unbelievable. I'm glad Dwight chose to leave and make his own path instead of having to follow this blowhard for 3-4 more years.

@Lakerfansince1979 In 2014 the Lakers could have as much as $50 million in cap space.  Oh, and check out the list of next year's free agents.

@Lakerfansince1979...You're right Kobe is a realist.

Realistically, the Lakers with Kobe & Pau at the core are capable of winning a few more championships.  I think the franchise would've been better off never signing Howard or Nash, in one terrible off season.  But, as Kobe said, we move forward...together!

Kobe is chasing RINGS, not individual accolades, friend!  It just so happens that, he is one of the greatest to ever play the game, and with that comes individual records.  Ultimately, we still have a shot at the Championship any time we have Kobe and Pau on the floor.

We will rise again "Lakersfansince1979" and if you're with us, you might as well go root for Lebron & Co.

@ckrause I agree with all you said aside from Howard sucks, haha! He can play but, I dont think he was the right fit for the Lakers. The Lakers and Celtics are along with the knicks to me places were its an honor to play. NY Knicks because of the knowledge of the fans and the tradition of NY regarding b-ball despite no recent rings. Boston and LA, goes without saying why they are places to want to play. Dwight didnt want to be there,PERIOD! He could stay for 3 years with KOBE but, to him, hes 30 then and he wants to not be with a legend over his head and a coach that he doesnt respect. Dwight leaving is a blessing, not a curse. If he stayed it would have been HELL for the LAkers, he NEVER wanted to be there, he used LA to get out. He wanted to play for Jay-Z and be a star on that level. Houston wont win a ring with the team they have now. Howard isnt a leader YET, Harden is good, not Durant type great nor D Wade type great. They are not ready to beat the elite and cant forget about Memphis and the Spurs and the Warriors up and coming team. Lakers need to get some shooters with Kobe and Gasol like Jordan had with Steve Kerr and John Paxson in his day!

@DaSpiderMonkeys

That's the problem - Kobe is more interested in getting 100 pts than actually winning.  Maybe they can find someone else to help get a ring - but Shaq is long gone and there is no one that can bring years back to a prima donna cry baby with a torn achilles - bye bye lakers - Can't wait the see the Warriors dominate you next season.

LeeTaylor
LeeTaylor

@Breezy04 I agree, I dont think they REALLY wanted him, especially KOBE. He didnt seem to be a leader, Shaq was a leader and so was Kareem and back to George Mikan and Wilt in there days, the Laker BIG MEN wanted the pressure. They didnt always win but, took the pressure cause they wanted to win. Dwight is about things other than rings, he says he can win in Houston? What? If he stayed in LA, they would probably get Lebron to come there in a couple years. Maybe D Wade, heat have to drop somebody,hahaha! Yeah, Lakers didnt want Dwight, didnt seem they did much to keep him and heard D'antoni didnt try and say much in the meeting at all to Dwight. No coach who wants a player does that,hahahah!

@Breezy04 Kobe and Pau are good friends off the court.  You might want to get your facts straight before posting crap.  You can follow cry baby Dwight to Houston and watch him cry there

@Breezy04

Uhh, he has not "openly mocked" Gasol.  The "big boy pants" comment was not mocking, he was telling him to buck up.  Gasol and Kobe are tight.

Oh, and the Lakers DID NOT want D12 back.  They know, multiple baby mamas and all, that he is too weak-minded to lead a team to a ring. They sent Kobe in there to piss D12 off about teaching how to win (which is true).  Then, they sat back and watched D12's feeble mind walk away upset.

@d3 @DEJ1948 Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but anyone who continues to use the "mom's basement behind a computer" line is the real loser.  Have an original thought every now and then.  It'll be a revelation.

Oh and just to clarify, whether one is a loser or not is a function of the sort of person they are, not wins, awards and money earned.  Try getting your arms around that one.

6marK6
6marK6

@d3 @DEJ1948 You Kobe jock-sniffers can go back about ten years in knowledge of the NBA. You really don't have enough knowledge of the NBA to say who was the greatest or not. Your knowledge comes from commercials and hype.

robertsucks

@pcwhite2 @Breezy04 yeah right - good logic there smart guy.  So you think the executives met with Dwight for over 2 hours and brought their prima donna whiner in to piss him off so he wouldn't come back.  If they didn't want him back, they could have just ignored him.  You must have just added another Kobe poster to your bedroom ceiling.  Good luck watching the most overrated player degrade before your eyes the next 3 years.  No playoffs coming with this loser giving pep talks on how to win & then shooting 75% of the team's possessions away.  Bye bye Lakers - big boy pants are now for Kobe.  Prepare for losses - MANY losses.

@DEJ1948 @d3

It actually is a function of wins, in a sports context. Kobe is the definition of a winner. In the games that matter most, he wins more than he loses. Steve Nash, on the other hand...

True, Kobe wasn't the ONLY reason DW's gone...but he didn't help matters at all.  A hater since DW came on board...ask Shaq.  Everyone knew from the LAL playoffs that DW & LAL played as team (Kobe was out).

@DEJ1948 @d3 dude..kobe isnt the problem..thts ignorant to say and  clearly you dont watch enough nba..the coaching staff and big pressure is what it is. plus its a better move (at the moment) for dwight to go to houston because the pieces suit him better (at the moment). but dont say kobes the faulter considering how much hes done for the lakers..hes the only reason they even made it to the playoffs last season.

@ITATTRACTS @Mr. J @donil02 @Breezy04

I guess you can just record the memories of when Kobe was good - that way you can tell everyone in ten years about those championships instead of focusing on the 40 wins they get and the 38% FG % with Kobe hogging the ball - live in the past - it will help you have something to argue with when people start seeing the truth about the ego maniac the Lakers are wasting their money on.

@pcwhite2 @Mr. J @Breezy04 The only problem is, that those in position to know, do.  Kobe raped that girl, and then, paid her off.  The rape was not pretty or vaginal.

(Sigh) Everyone knows Kobe did not rape the girl in CO.  Everyone knows she left Kobe and freaked one, possible two other dudes (their semen was found in her nasty panties).  Everyone knows she was/is mentally ill, Kobe stupidly got with a crazy woman, and he decided to settle to shut it all down.

Nice try.
