Heat tease red, black alternate jerseys

The Heat teased two “new” alternate jersey designs on Tuesday, offering a first look at a tweaked red jersey and a throwback black jersey.

The red uniform, modeled by Dwyane Wade above, is similar to the monochromatic look Miami sported on Christmas 2012. Comparing the two jerseys, though, it appears the 2013-14 version has new white trim on both the top and the shorts.

Although the trim change is subtle, it was the right call. Last year’s monochromatic looks for Christmas were intentionally bold, and this year’s look maintains that striking visual while adding a refined quality.

GOLLIVER: NBA could add ‘nickname jerseys’ in 2013-14

The black look, donned by reigning MVP LeBron James above, throws back to the late 1990s, when Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway and company sported a similar look. The one major difference: the “Heat” lettering on the front is in white rather than red.

Miami has worn a few different black designs in recent years, including this look from the 2011-12 season, which sported a simpler simpler design with white trim and no red.

The new black throwback look pictured at the top isn’t all that risky, but that’s fine because it’s a classic. It’s a good reminder that simple is sometimes better, and that a simple design element — the flame logo off of the “T” in “Heat” — can go a long way.

The NBA announced last week that James had the best-selling jersey worldwide. Wade ranked No. 5 on the list.
