Derrick Rose will not play in Chicago’s exhibition game against Washington in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday due to soreness in his surgically-repaired left knee.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Rose was scratched for precautionary reasons and that he will not undergo an MRI.

“He had a little soreness and we are being ultra conservative because it’s the third game of preseason,” Bulls executive John Paxson told the Tribune. “We know there’s nothing structurally to be worried about. It’s just a little soreness.”

The 2011 MVP and three-time All-Star played 20 minutes in Chicago’s Oct. 5 preseason opener against Indiana, scoring 13 points and dishing three assists. He then scored 13 points and dished three assists in 23 minutes against Memphis on Oct. 7, before the Bulls departed for Brazil as part of the NBA’s “Global Games” international slate.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday that Rose was feeling good about the state of his left knee, which was repaired in April 2012 after he tore his ACL in a playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers. He sat out the entire 2012-13 season as he rehabilitated from the injury.

“I’m very surprised,’’ Rose said, “having the opportunity to go out and see how it is. I’m just trying to knock the rust off. Of course, I’m going to be a little rusty because I missed so many days, missed so many games, but I’m happy we have this many preseason games because it gives me the opportunity to go out there and really try things along the way.’’

The paper further reported that the initial plan was for Rose to play roughly 25 minutes against the Wizards.

Rose, 25, averaged 21.8 points, 7.9 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game during the 2011-12 season.

Chicago opens its regular season schedule on Oct. 29 against Miami at the American Airlines Arena. Rose is not expected to play under a hard minutes limit during the regular season.
