Video: Ricky Rubio nutmegs Michael Carter-Williams with bounce pass
Timberwolves guard Ricky Rubio split the wickets by throwing a bounce pass between the legs of Sixers rookie guard Michael Carter-Williams to find Kevin Love for a lay-up in transition during Minnesota’s 125-102 preseason win on Wednesday night.
Bringing the ball up the court with a little more than 9 minutes remaining and the score tied at 5, the Spanish point guard appeared to be eyeing his mark all the way. Once Love cut free to the near side of the paint, Rubio stepped straight from his dribble into a right-handed bounce pass that found its way easily underneath Carter-Williams’ splaying attempt to stop the ball. Love caught the pass and turned in rhythm, converting the point-blank lay-up with ease.
Honestly, a preseason game against the dreadful Sixers is only about one level above a pick-up run at your local gym, and Carter-Williams happens to be a rookie (one who just got torched the other day by Kyrie Irving). Those facts make this sequence equal parts jaw-dropping and sympathy-inducing.
Rubio finished with two points, five assists, five rebounds and five steals, Love added 19 points and six rebounds, and J.J. Barea scored a team-high 22 points for Minnesota.
Carter-Williams finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, five steals and two turnovers in 28 minutes. James Anderson led the Sixers with a game-high 23 points in a losing effort.
Minnesota improved to 4-2 in the preseason with the win; Philadelphia dropped to 2-5 with the loss.
