Video: Lakers’ Xavier Henry throws down poster dunk on Pelicans’ Jeff Withey

2013-14 Dunk of the Year, Ben Golliver, Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans, Xavier Henry

Lakers guard Xavier Henry threw down a poster dunk over Pelicans rookie center Jeff Withey at the Staples Center on Tuesday.

With a little less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter and the Lakers holding an 82-60 lead, Henry found himself all alone at the top of the key after losing two defenders with a pump-faked pass.

Attacking straight down the middle of the key, the left-handed Henry launched over Withey, who hovered on the edge of the restricted circle in an attempt to dissuade the drive. Henry simply went up and over Withey, brushing his head away in the process, and the seven-footer wound up on the ground when all was said and done.

Both Henry, a 2010 lottery pick, and Withey, a 2013 second-round pick, are former Kansas Jayhawks.

“I knew it was Jeff,” Henry said afterwards, according to “He decided to take a charge and that wasn’t the right thing for him.”

Henry joins the “Dunk of the Year” conversation, which also includes Celtics forward Jeff Green and Nuggets forward J.J. Hickson.

Back during the preseason, Henry threw down a big dunk over Jazz guard Justin Holiday.

L.A. went on to defeat New Orleans 116-95. Henry finished with 15 points (on 7-for-11 shooting), two rebounds and one assist. Jordan Hill led the Lakers with 21 points (on 7-for-12 shooting) and 11 rebounds.

Eric Gordon led the Pelicans with 17 points (on 5-for-13 shooting) and three assists in the loss.

The Lakers improved to 4-5; the Pelicans dropped to 3-5.
