PORTLAND, Ore. — An unspecified right knee injury forced Bulls guard Derrick Rose from action during Chicago’s 98-95 loss to the Blazers Friday night in Portland. He left the arena on crutches and will undergo an MRI on Saturday.

Rose departed with 3:20 remaining in the third period. He finished with 20 points (on 6-for-19 shooting), five rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes.

The injury appeared to occur without contact as he cut toward the hoop to receive a backdoor pass.

“He has pain and felt like he couldn’t push off the right knee,” Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau. “We’re not sure [of the specific diagnosis]. The doctor looked at him but he’s scheduled to have an MRI [on Saturday].”

The 2011 MVP had to be helped to the Bulls’ locker room after Bulls staffers initially attended to him on Chicago’s bench. The extent of his injury is not yet known but the Bulls announced midway through the fourth quarter that Rose would not return to the game.

Rose tore the ACL in his left knee during the 2012 playoffs and sat out the entire 2012-13 season as he rehabilitated.

“I don’t want to speculate on what it is or what it might be other than my concern for him,” Thibodeau said of the injury. “I know how much work he’s put into his rehab, that’s the type of person he is, that’s the type of player he is. So concern for that, I feel for him because of all the things that he means to our team.”

Taj Gibson and Joakim Noah both expressed hope that the injury wasn’t significant.

“I didn’t see the play, I just saw him limping,” Gibson said. “I didn’t think it was anything too serious. I was just hoping for the best. … He’s a strong guy. He worked extremely hard this summer trying to get his body right, working out every day. So it sucks that this has to happen but that’s what happens in this league. It’s a tough league.”

Chicago is already without starting two guard Jimmy Butler, who is sidelined with turf toe.

The Bulls are currently in the midst of a six-game road trip and will play on Sunday against the Clippers in Los Angeles.

The 90's MJ-Pippen Bulls were a once in history happening to the franchise. The Bulls will never have a reign like that again.

Odds of tearing an ACL are 1:1750

Once you ave and ACL tear, odds of reinjuring repaired knee or the opposite healthy knee increase to 1:33

whatever it is it's not good.  This is not going to be something that gets better tomorrow.

Too bad.  The NBA desperately needs likeable superstars like Rose.  Once those knees go...it's over.

Once I had game, and it was a gas.
Soon found out, had legs of glass.
Seemed like the real thing, only to find.
My fifteen minutes have all gone behind.

Derrick Rose is a great guy, so this makes me sad.

@jackgorfin I have sympathy for you because you're a loser. Seriously, anyone who faces an injury that risks their career will suffer if they enjoy what they do, regardless of the money. Go kill yourself.

@blee_ Wish I could disagree with you, but I can't. I've read countless studies that praise the work of medicine in recovering and salvaging some careers, but that far too often these athletes should never be allowed back into aggressive sports after an injury such as this. It's tough. I hope he recovers. And if he doesn't, I hope he has the mental strength to continue to be the role model that he has been in Chicago for so many kids.

@ShawnKemp2012 Likable? Since when did cheating your way in to college with Calipari, and then skipping town just as the NCAA is about to bring the hammer down on lil ol' Memphis make you "likable"? Maybe I'm missing something here because I'm not a Bulls fan, but that's a pretty sheisty move.

@Marchoir What a pathetic loser. It's a good thing you're hiding behind your computer, clowning on men who, given the standards set forth by typical athletes, are pretty decent hard-working gentlemen. You should be so lucky to even have your 15 minutes of fame. And should it come, I hope it's under the scrutiny of media and social networking so you can get a dose of the crap you spew out. Loser.

@WHO*IS*ESPN I bet you're a rock of a physical specimen? No? How about you hold off on the condescending comments against a hard-working young man until you are.

@Beth3 this guy took off during last year's playoffs. he simply doesn't care about winning. he is not competitive. jordan and kobe would NEVER even THINK about sitting out, let alone doing it

Rose is a self-absorbed punk with a guaranteed contract who's more interested in selling athletic apparel than in winning NBA titles.

 Another Baroness Davis.

@GokartMozart @ShawnKemp2012 You're definitely missing something. The corrupt system should not be placed on the shoulder of one young man to bear responsibility for. He was a kid. And given some of the hardships some of these kids go through, can you blame them for trying to get a little lucky? Save the nepotism for when you have absolutely nothing to be sorry for and have purged yourself of every wrong deed you have ever committed. Until then, quit railing on kids that may be more of a man than you'll ever be.

@OK @Beth3 And how many NBA titles have you won? Do you sell any apparel? Are kids wearing your jersey, mimicking your cadences and moves as they play ball? Looks like you're the punk. Only thing you have guaranteed is the welfare check that comes to you every 2nd week of the month.

Says the guy who typed this: "I also hear your mom offers her roast beef to anyone with half a pulse and a few rocks to spare.". So unlike your hero Rose, you're classless AND a liar. You're lucky I left your incredibly racist last sentence off. I live in Chicago...pretty sure your hero isn't a racist, either.

@SukeMadiq @WestcoastMD @bobinpowell @Marchoir Grew up eating scraps from McDonald's trash cans and you cant spell french fry? Come on now. @bobinpowell @WestcoastMD @Marchoir That hurt. I'm gonna go back to take whatever dignity I have left, get into my convertible, and hide in my plush Los Angeles medical practice. When I'm ready, and when I have the strength, I'll show my face again to you. And when I do, please include the sweet and sour sauce and the extra napkins when you hand me the Happy Meals I'm gonna shove down your mom's throat.

@PSWE2013 @WestcoastMD @WHO*IS*ESPN A pretty cool guy one time said: do unto others as you want others to do unto you (something like that). Don't need to be a practicing Christian, Jew, or Muslim to appreciate the notion behind that.

Least I'm not a phony multimillionaire with a guaranteed contract who'd rather milk injuries to sell athletic apparel than win NBA titles.

Pity you cannot type the same about the Chicago Advertising Executive, Rosey.
