NBA fines Nets’ Jason Kidd for intentionally spilling soda on court

Ben Golliver, Brooklyn Nets, Jason Kidd, Los Angeles Lakers

The NBA has fined Nets coach Jason Kidd $50,000 for intentionally spilling soda during Brooklyn’s 99-94 loss to the L.A. Lakers on Wednesday, the league announced Thanksgiving Day.

The fine was first reported by Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.com.

With 8.3 seconds remaining and the Lakers leading 96-94, Jodie Meeks prepared to take the second of two free throws. Without any timeouts remaining, Kidd began a conversation with second-year guard Tyshawn Taylor while holding a plastic cup of soda and ice in his right hand. Taylor bumped into Kidd’s arm during the conversation, causing the soda to spill on the court, and Kidd initially bent over as if he was going to scoop up the ice cubes and cup before an official stopped the game so that an attendant could clean up the mess.

TheBrooklynGame.com reviewed the tape (see above) and concluded that Kidd said “Hit me” to Taylor before the soda-spilling collision. Why cause such a mess? Two possible reasons: 1) to ice Meeks on his second free throw and 2) to draw up a play for Brooklyn’s final, game-deciding offensive possession.

Kidd said the spill was accidental during his postgame comments, according to TheBrooklynGame.

“Cup slipped out of my hand I was getting Ty,” Kidd said. “Sweaty palms. I was never good with the ball.”

“In the heat of the battle, you’re trying to get guys in and out of the game, and the cup fell out of my hand.”

The New York Post reported Taylor’s take.

“Coach is drinking a soda on the sideline … I was like, ‘What’s he doing?’”

“It could ice a free throw shooter and be a timeout when you don’t have one, but that wasn’t the thought process.”

Here’s an animated look at Kidd’s mouth movements, the spillage and his reaction.

The Nets fell to 4-11 after Paul Pierce was unable to hit a potential game-tying three-pointer during Brooklyn’s last possession.

From now on I'm going to wait a week to watch a game...that way all the second and third guessers can have their say....And for an commentator to make such a Stupid comment on live TV...Well that deserves a fine...His own admission, I did that all the time.

Jason won't win an academy award for his soda spilling shenanigans, but at least he'll do anything for a win even though the Lakers had this game all night, but that was the most entertaining last minute of a game in awhile with all the Net's assistants waving their arms on the floor like they were mopping up for the "stall", but the 2 Lakers in the middle of the Nets "sodagate" huddle was even more hilarious....bad night for Jason.

Jason Kidd gets a $50K fine for the not so accidental spill.  I bet NOTHING happens to that tool of a HC in Pittsburgh who absolutely was intentionally in the way of the returner, with one foot ON THE FIELD.

Desperation?  Just a complete A hole?  Doesn't care about the dignity of the game?  Yes, to all three for Tomlin.  What a waste of life.

Jason Kidd, meet Mike Tomlin.  Mike Tomlin, meet Jason Kidd.

He will be gone after this season. He has no business being a head coach without paying his dues as an assistant first. The evidence was clear on video that he told his player to intentionally bump him. Pretty bush league.

I love how he manages to keep his suit clean.  Where that cup was, if it was a real accident he would have been wet.

That was actually pretty creative on Jason's part. And I would say that acting is much better than something you would see on WWE.

Looks like Jason would be another bad actor with the WWE !

How long before the media dubs this incident "Sodagate".

Wow. That's what's it's come to. Pretty desperate attempt. No surprise the Nets are 4-11.

Oh J Kidd, you wife-punching, Keith-Van-Horn-under-the-bus-throwing, dull-interview-giving scamp!

That turned out to be an expensive cup of soda. Which also will probably cost Kidd his job. And it gives new meaning to the term soda jerk.

@John4 Let's not over do it. Tomlin was wrong and should be fined. And I'm a Ravens fan. But 'a waste of life' is absurd when we're talking about men playing a boys game.

@Bigtruth Actually he was trying to stop the clock no had no timeouts. So, yeah, it was a pretty good idea. The billionaire owner will pay the fine.

@OttitiesUnlimitedLTD I'll agree with that 100%! When they finish at the bottom of the league this year, the "KIDD" experiment will be over in Brooklyn.
