Riddled with injuries and early season losses, the Knicks are in discussions to acquire veteran point guard Kyle Lowry from the Raptors, according to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein.

Per Stein, New York would likely have to send veteran point guard Raymond Felton and another player to Toronto in order to make the salaries work. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, that player would be Metta World Peace along with the team’s 2018 first-round pick.

The 6-15 Knicks have struggled to get consistent play at the point this season, starting the ailing Felton in 16 of 21 games. The ninth-year pro has played so poorly this season — a career-low 11.8 Player Efficiency Rating and just 27.9 percent shooting from three-point range — that he was recently named to The Point Forward’s All-Atrocious Team, highlighting the worst starters in the league.

Lowry, 27, would serve as a respectable upgrade for the Knicks, who have also been rumored to be considering a coaching change during their immense struggles. On the season, Lowry is averaging 14.6 points, 6.7 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals for the Raptors while shooting a serviceable 36.1 percent from behind the arc. He’s regarded as a solid perimeter defender (something the Knicks lack at the point) and comes at the relatively reasonable price of $6.2 million this season, with his contract set to expire after 2013-14.

If Felton were dealt, it would mark the fourth time in four years, having played for the Blazers and Nuggets since his 2010-11 with the Knicks. Felton posted a solid campaign last season, starting and playing in 68 games and averaging 14.8 points and 5.8 assists, but much like the Knicks, this season has been a drastically different story. Felton is due a little under $12 million over the next three years and holds a player option for 2015-16.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Lowry wasn’t the first point guard on the Knicks’ radar:

A trade with the Raptors could be more likely due to Toronto’s desire to make moves. Last week, GM Masai Ujiri pulled the trigger on seven-player blockbuster with Sacramento, sending Rudy Gay, Aaron Gray and Quincy Acy to the Kings in exchange for Greivis Vasquez, Patrick Patterson, Chuck Hayes and John Salmons.

Over the summer, the Raptors and Knicks also did some high-profile business, with the Knicks acquiring Andrea Bargnani from the Raptors. So far, that trade has yielded mixed results for New York. While the team is at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, Bargnani has started all but one game and is averaging 14.2 points and 5 rebounds on 44.2 percent shooting from the field.

No way Toronto makes this deal, why give up a good player for garbage and a 2018 pick?

With DeMar and Ross...I don't know why Raps would be that interested in Hardaway Jr or Shumpert anyways.  Team are not giving up their 1'st round picks as easily this year...if Lowry value can't get a 1'st round pick, how can Shumpert?

In Masai we trust :)  I'm sure he'll get a sweet deal done.  At worse we keep Lowry...if he resigns for $5m-$6m, it's not that bad really.  But I wouldn't take the risk and let him walk for free, need something back for him.

NY's latest offer: World Peace and Felton for Lowry.  Why would toronto do that? I'm a knicks fan, but that's crazy

Not sure why the Raptors would want back Felton and his long contract.  He's a terrible PG.  If Shumpert or Hardaway Jr. is not part of the deal then I would walk away if I'm the Raptors.

I just pretty much expect any deal the Knicks make to backfire at this point.

Shumpert to a third team for a 1st round pick, then the pick and Felton to the Raptors for Lowry. Why would Raptors take on Felton's salary and what would surely be a supercharged appetite for cheeseburgers and fried foods?

@SukeMadiq Exactly.  Everybody says, well they are tanking, but NY has nothing to offer.  Lakers are literally playing w/o a PG, and Nets never know when JWill's gonna play.  Unless NYK continues to allow Urjiri to rape them into the future, no way Lowry is coming to the Apple.

@weakside Hopefully we make them take one of Fields or Hayes contracts as part of the deal.

@EnashWaca Because the raptors are trying to suck this year to get a high lottery pick, and right now they're playing too well.  Thats why they're fin with felton and a 2018 pick

Felton's salary isn't bad but if he went all Baron Davis on the Raps' it could turn ugly quick. I simply don't see why we (Raps fan btw) would give up Lowry for anything less than a projected 15th or better pick... He's the same player he's been for years; slight-plus on D, solid 3pt shooting, just don't ask him to co-ordinate offense on a consistent basis. He needs another ballhandler to play with - Melo fits that bill, albeit as a hog.

All of that being said, it makes a lot of sense for the Knicks. They can't give up Shumpert, or else they can't patch their perimeter D holes with two quality defense guards. Then your 6th man logically becomes an offense-off-the-bench-guy. Fits them well assuming Chandler's health that is...

Knowing all that, this trade makes little sense. You can get two second rounders or equivalent if you facilitated as a sign-and-trade... Don't do this deal, please...

That's fine if Felton was an expiring deal but it's not.  Doesn't make long term sense.  At all

@EnashWaca Well they are trying to lure the knicks to add more than just Felton.  I am sure they are saying, we will take Felton off your hands but you have to make it worth while by adding the 2018 pick and one of Tim H. Jr or Shump.   Raps are not going to take Felton and Metta.  Masai is trying to leverage the desperation the knicks need at PG, cause they need to turn this around now.
