Video: Heat’s LeBron James throws down poster dunk over Kings’ Ben McLemore

2013-14 Dunk of the Year, Ben Golliver, Ben McLemore, LeBron James, Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings

Heat forward LeBron James threw down a poster dunk over Kings guard Ben McLemore during the first quarter of Miami’s 122-103 home victory on Friday.

Kapow. What more is there to say?

With a little less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter and the Heat leading 21-19, James used a screen from Mario Chalmers at the left angle to turn the corner on Derrick Williams and attack the paint. With Williams trailing the play and Isaiah Thomas retreating to defend Chalmers, James had a clear path to the basket and he didn’t hesitate.

McLemore tried to rotate over to take a charge by standing tall, but it didn’t matter as James was already into his thunderous, high-flying act, getting his head level with the rim. Meanwhile, James’ thigh was connecting with McLemore’s shoulder, sending the rookie to the ground, as he finished the one-handed dunk with authority. Despite some contact, no foul was called on the play, and McLemore’s feet were on the restricted circle, anyway.

The Sun-Sentinel reported reaction from both players.

“It sucks that it’s him,” James said of the rookie out of Kansas, “because I like him. I knew I could get to the launching pad.”

“I just went over there to try to take the charge,” [McLemore] said. “He dunked the ball. Afterwards, I thought I should have just fouled him.”

This qualifies as James’ personal “Dunk of the Year” and it’s worth another look (or three).

James joins a growing “Dunk of the Year” conversation, which also includes poster dunks by Lakers guard Xavier Henry, Celtics forward Jeff Green, Nuggets forward J.J. Hickson, Magic guard Victor Oladipo and Pistons forward Josh Smith.

"Violently" dunk? PLEASE stop the azz kissing of this self absorbed fool. ++

His list of "victims" are guards named Jason Terry, Beno Udrih, and Ben McLemore.  Michael Jordan used to do this stuff to guys like Ewing and Mutombo.

Poor Lebron...he didn't want to get his hands hurt...just a lame throw-down.

Just look at the throw-down again...the rim and the backboard didn't even move!!!  ...It's not even a dunk!!!

Weak and lame ... definitely not worthy to be a frontpage graping highlight.

This isn't even the best dunk THIS WEEK.... Weak.

I am a Lebron's fan...but this is pretty lame if this the dunk of the year.  It's an ok dunk...definitely not dunk of the week or the month let alone dunk of the year.

Come on guys...raise your standards!!!

To me it looks pretty close to a charge. McLemore plants his feet just outside the restricted circle just before Lebron jumps.

But in the NBA they stopped calling traveling a long time ago, why call a charge? The NBA should take notes from the NFL about how to manage a league, but it seems more like they are looking to the WWE.

Sorry Ben this is not college, the name on the back of the Jersey defines the rules, not a rule book.  I like Lebron, top 10 of all time, no question, but his game would be a shell of what it is now if he had to play against a thing called defense, you can look up defense since young people have never seen it before, youtube the pistons of the late80s early 90s, and Knicks of early to mid 90s.  Oh and check out how the GOAT learned how to beat them with savvy smart play and brillance the game has not seen since 1998.

Hey, rookie, thank LeBron for making you a household name.

This isn't a game.  Games have rules.  This is a beauty pageant.

Basketball sucks.  That's the great play of the year?   Boring sport.

It's called a charge!  He would do that to me once, then I would undercut his sorry carcass the next time he tried! They have ruined basketball!

I wish he played back in the 80's...his stare down would have gotten him clotheslined by someone from the Pistons (and I'm not a Pistons fan).

Dunk of the year? Hardly. When are sports outlets going to get over LeBron James? Every time he does something it's the "whatever" of the year. I'm waiting for "leg cramp of the year"

Are you kidding me?  That dunk was pretty much uncontested!  Nothing to see here...

NO it's not. good but not "best". everything this guy does has to be the "best of the year". If a 6'8" black dude can't dunk, then you got problems.  last night at the Pacer game, Stevenson did a half azz move for a behind the back pass which a jr high school kid does and the crowd went wild...........then he did his jiggie shimmie dance like it was great.

This wouldn't have happened if the Kings played in Seattle..  Ben would have pulled an Earl Thomas and lit up LeBron.

Um that was just a plain dunk......is SI trying to create something out of nothing or are their editors just that stupid.....

John Wall's open 360 dunk was more exciting than this.

I've seen a million better. It was typical.  Standing and looking like a moron after a dunk doesnt make it great.

effeweall

this is what its come to, he barely made contact with him and he looked for a charge?  then everyone on the bench acted like LeBron could actually run a half court play.

Eh? I was expecting to see something earth shattering... This was quite tepid..

The dunk he did on Jason Terry in Boston was nastier.

@JoeCabot

Please stop you act like lebron has a choice of who stands under the rim.. in that case Vince still has a seroius case of road rash on his balls from rubbing them on that 7-footer's head.. Something Jordan could never do...

Stop comparing Jordan to Lebron...  Jordan is a scorer with numbers in other areas Lebron has a better all around game than Jordan ever did...  not even close !!!

Tell me / Dit Moi, What other player can win Back to Back Rings being his team's best scorer, defender, rebounder, passer.... just think about it i would love your answer because one thing i could tell you.... its not jordan...

@lenbiz68 Yup, those Pistons teams would have James shooting 15 footers all night lol.

bobdevo

@lenbiz68"he would do that to me once".

Yeah, right, Len, when he hauled his 260 pounds into high gear you'd "undercut his sorry carcass" and then we'd have to sweep what was left of you into a dustpan and set the remains out by the dumpsters

Ryan19
Ryan19

@lenbiz68 Except that it isn't a charge at all.  Also, you wouldn't do a thing other than talk tough on a keyboard.  I doubt Lebron would be scared of the guys from the old school Pistons.  He would beat those guys senseless and they would have known that and steered clear of angering him.

@effeweall The sad part is in college that is a charge, which is why Ben tried it in the first place.

JoeCabot
JoeCabot

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler Jordan dunked on plenty of small guys as well.  But his best work was going over the big guys, something that we have yet to see from your hero.   All we have gotten is LBJ dunking on guards and standing a couple of them like it was a one of the great NBA moments.

bobdevo

@Ryan19@lenbiz68I don't think len gets that LeBron has 20 pounds on Laimbeer and is faster than Isiah Thomas.

@JoeCabot

No Lebron is not my hero, the people in my family are the only heros in my life... I love good basketball and i love watching the best play... i was a huge Jordan fan at the time and never followed another player until Lebron came into the league.. mind you i did liked Hardaway, Dražen Petrović

But you still refuse to answer myself.because you cannot deny what Lebron has done,

unlike you i am objective when judging a player... still waiting for you to answer my question !!!
