Carmelo Anthony sets Knicks franchise, MSG scoring records with career-high 62 points

Ben Golliver, Carmelo Anthony, Charlotte Bobcats, New York Knicks

Carmelo Anthony scored a career-high 62 points in New York’s 125-96 home victory over Charlotte on Friday, setting a Knicks franchise record and a Madison Square Garden record.

“I was just taking it one possession at a time,” Anthony told MSG Network in a post-game interview. “I came into the game locked in. I didn’t know I was going to have this type of performance. It’s an unbelievable feeling. … It’s just a zone you get into sometimes. Only a certain group of people know what that zone feels like. Tonight was one of those zones. My teammates saw that.”

Anthony surpassed Bernard King’s franchise record of 60 points, set against the Nets on Dec. 25, 1984. He also broke Kobe Bryant’s Madison Square Garden record of 61 points, set on Feb. 2, 2009.

“It didn’t really sink in exactly what I did tonight,” Anthony told MSG. “I know Bernard King is somewhere smiling at me right now.”

New York’s Hall of Fame forward in turn saluted Anthony’s record-breaking performance.

“I am very proud of Carmelo Anthony,” King said, according to the Knicks. “I consider him to be one of the greatest players in our game. If anyone was to break my Knicks record that I have held for so long, I’m absolutely delighted that it was Carmelo.”

Along the way, the home crowd serenaded the seven-time All-Star with chants of “M-V-P” and “We want ‘Melo.”

The 62 points also set a high mark for the 2013-14 NBA season, eclipsing the 54 points scored by Kevin Durant against the Warriors last week. Anthony’s tally was the highest single-game scoring total since Bryant poured in 65 points against the Blazers on March 16, 2007.

“It was jaw-dropping,” Knicks guard Iman Shumpert said, according to the New York Daily News. “We didn’t know what to do but get our popcorn and watch.”

Anthony’s 62 points came on 23-for-35 shooting, 6-for-11 on three-pointers and 10-for-10 from the foul line. He added 13 rebounds and didn’t register an assist in 39 minutes. Anthony becomes just the second player since the 1985-86 season to register 62 or more points without tallying an assist, joining Bryant, who had an assist-less 62 points against the Mavericks on Dec. 20, 2005.

Here’s a look at his shot chart.

carmelo-anthony-shot-chart

Amazingly, the damage could have been significantly worse. Anthony exited the game with 7:22 remaining in the fourth quarter and New York leading 109-72.

Heat forward LeBron James turned to Twitter to call on Knicks coach Mike Woodson to let Anthony keep playing, despite the scoring margin.

“[Come on] Mike Woodson keep Carmelo Anthony in,” James wrote. “I wanna see 70-to-75 [points]!”

Everything was clicking for Anthony, who even nailed a half-court buzzer-beater to finish with 37 points in the first half.

“Everything he threw up was going in and it was nice to see,” Woodson said, according to NBA.com. “We rode him to a win.”

Anthony’s previous career high was 50 points, set on three occasions: April 2, 2013 (for the Knicks against the Heat), Feb. 7, 2011 (for the Nuggets against the Rockets), and Nov. 27, 2009 (for the Nuggets against the Knicks).

New York improved to 16-27 with the win. Charlotte dropped to 19-26 with the loss.

i cant believe you people are all hating on him so much, even more than when he scores less.  good job, pick the 62 point game to hate on him.  melo is a great player and one of the best knicks ever.  whats ur problem, he did nothing wrong.

I think anyone who watches a lot of knicks game sees that melo tries harder then anyone on the team. The guy continues to put up numbers even when the rest of the team cant do anything. People who say he shoots too much, what is he supposed to do when every play mike woodson draws up is give melo the ball and everyone clear out and let him score. He has a higher career field goal % than paul pierce, ray allen, james harden etc.. yet people never bash those guys missing too many shots. His teams in denver never had much playoff success because they always played a juggernaut in the first round and who did he have to help him? nene? Guys like pierce and allen didnt win anything until they were on a team of 3 superstars. Melo isnt as good as lebron or kd but he is still one of the best players in the nba.

Going to end the board with this trolls should love the read.

*Carmelo Anthony was 13-for-18 (72.2%) from the mid-range area, including ten makes in the first half. He has not had more than 11 such makes in his career.

*Carmelo Anthony was double-teamed on eight touches against the Bobcats, all in the second half. He passed to his teammates on six of the eight touches and scored two points in such situations.

Carmelo Anthony scored a career-high and Knicks' record 62 points on 57 offensive touches Friday against the Bobcats. He passed 16 times (28%) on his offensive touches and attempted 35 shots (61%), tied for his career high.

[+]Carmelo Anthony scored 20 points in the first quarter; the only other player with 20+ points in first quarter this season is Joe Johnson (Jan. 10 vs Heat, 22).

Carmelo Anthony took 17 of his 35 shots on isolation plays. On such plays, he converted 10 for 22 points. He leads the league with 5.6 isolation points per game. - Anthony was 15-for-24 for 35 points on jump shots.  [+]From Elias: Carmelo Anthony had 62 points and 0 turnovers... FROM ELIAS: It's the most points scored without a turnover since individual turnovers were first recorded in 1977-78.

Carmelo Anthony was 11-for-13 (84.6%) for 25 points with Michael Kidd-Gilchrist as his primary defender on Friday, 30 percentage points higher than any other defender. He made one fewer shot against Kidd-Gilchrist than against all other defenders, on nine fewer attempts.

That was beautiful. Gorgeous mid-range performance.

Sounds like a ball hog to me.

Not much of a team player is he? Let other players put up 35 or more shots and they will have a lot of points too.

Was not aware that they kept MSG records. Never ever heard a record referenced as most anything in the MSG. I mean seriously, how many championships have been won by the Knicks in their history? One? There is no history. Hype, hype, hype.

Shame on SI, I'm a 13 year old girl that loves to play basketball and when I clicked on the video to see the scoring, all I heard was total crap coming from the speakers. I expected more of you SI, now I have to explain to my parents why my 4 year old brother is saying the "N" and "F" word and proclaiming that "He's God" (all lyrics to the song).

Really? Seriously? You're a national publication and you don't check what you're putting on your site? I'm 13 and now I know what my G'Pa means when he says something is "bush league. "

16-27.  in the east.  and people are chanting MVP?  He stinks.  He flung up 35 shots and made 23.  He usually averages 26.  he shot 67% instead of 38%.  Sign him for 40 mil a year for 7 years though.  He is the best in the playoffs, when he drives to the basket in mid air and then looks to pass.  But scoring 62 against the bobcats at 16-27 is an MVP in today's NBA.  It is fitting that BronBron was a fan of his game.  Game 6 LeBrons two drives in game 6 with under two minutes showed his actual basketball IQ.

Please stop wearing #6.  You are an insult to the Doctor.  You are Erin Andrews who can dunk, keep hawking products to the sheep who cant rec a travel.

Big deal - the ball hog had the shooting night of his life against an awful team. The Knicks are still abysmal. Melo is still a guy who shoots 44% and doesn't play defense. Can't wait to see what sucker signs him to a max contract this off-season.

Kobe and the Lakers will be there Sunday, I think.

Since he is all about self, especially last night, I wonder where his thought was for DEFENSE, the kind he basted the coach few days ago saying they aren't built for that and throwing him under the bus. Typical of his kind

I don't care personally, but you might want to note that the song in the background of the first video is NSFW

Sad that some people legitimately can't appreciate the greatness of their own time. Hate if you want, but Melo put up the most points since 2007! Like it or not, he's got the highest point total until Durant messes around and puts 80 on the Kings.

62 points in an NBA game is a great accomplishment. I'm not a Melo fan,I'm also not a Melo basher like a lot of folks here. It takes talent to put up those kind of #'s in the NBA. No assists isn't a big deal at all, when you are shooting lights out like that, why should anyone expect you to pass? They should of left him in for longer. I bet he could of hit at least 70. Probably the highlight of the year for Melo & the Knicks

sportsGuy12

Don't care for him, but prop's to his play today!  Got to give him due!

A 29 point win with 0 assist isn't a positive for team play in a blowout?  But then again? look at his team?

KristianColasacco

Even from an admitted Carmelo Anthony hater (I just think he's overrated) 62 points on 35 shots is really impressive.  I got nothing to say about this performance and anyone who does is really stretching.

Rashaad
Rashaad

Some of you guys are so funny. There is somewhere between 360 to 450 players in the NBA and 7 Billion people in the world. You kill me to say that you're not impressed what Carmelo did tonight. 62 points against the best basketball players in the world is VERY impressive. I don't care if he shot 200 shots with 0 assist. Try scoring 62 points playing against neighborhood kids and you couldn't do it.

99.9% of you guys on here have never played organized competitive basketball past high school, heck middle school. You will never break any record in your lifetime. Stick to your fantasy games and appreciate what just happened.

BigBubba

Great.  Now he will have his name in the record book, but I'd like to know how many teams since Syracuse has he led to the playoffs?  To the championship?  It seems that in the pros, he has not been able to lead.  So for the points, it's individual glory.  But he lacks team glory in the pros.

GoldenAgeNBA
GoldenAgeNBA

@raput76 who was he going to pass to, himself? He  passed out of every double team that led to an open score for his teammates. They were winning by 30 in the 4th..just pure hate.

Udaho

@raput76 Had to laugh about this too. But then again..its a bigtime milestone scoring 62 points no matter what, who or where.

Pierce is just tossing the ball up to draw a shooting foul half the time though, that is why his percent is lower.

Can't argue with this game, now most of the rest of his career has some low points.

@ChiefGhe passed on 30% of his touches and no if you let a player shoot 35 times they will not get 62 pts that tells me youve never played basketball in your life

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler Knicks averaged 32 wins a season before C.A. , a winning record since.  did You attack Bernard King ?  Did Jordan win anything without 2 'best 50 of all time' teammates ?

@saron.whitt One thing you will have to tolerate in life young one, is that many people are in roles that they are completely  incompetent to have. Many end up at SI.

Though in all honesty you sound much older than 13, almost as if someone wrote it as if they wanted people to know you were that young.

@cheartbreaker like it or not he IS the biggest pouter and baby since 2007 and shoots MORE than anyone else and gets his feelings hurt. See few days ago when he cried about the poor defense coach uses....basically trashing his coach in public.

mjt424
mjt424

@sportsGuy12Sir, his team won easily. I'm guessing the coach would let him shoot all the shots if he can hit nearly 66 percent of them and get to the foul line often, as he did.

Voiceover310
Voiceover310

@Rashaad What team do you play for and how many records have you broken? If you are comparing stats from everyone in the world to what Melo put up last night, we ALL had the same amount of assists. Not bad since it was against the GREATEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD.

ericeric
ericeric

@BigBubba who can have team glory when this is your team:

1. Shumpert who has half a brain and a basketball IQ of 0. i swear i would trade him for a bag of basketballs

2. JR Smith, who is just crazy.

3. Bargnani who is a seven footer who cant get rebounds or play down low defense

4. Kenyon Martin who i like but is too old to play second center, maybe third center at best. and we got him off his couch

5. prigioni, who is a point gaurd but doesnt have the handles to bring the ball up, he always ends up backing up the other teams point gaurd

And all the other players keep getting injured.  he has no choice but to play by himself

mjt424
mjt424

@BigBubba Isn't basketball a team sport? No one, not even Jordan or LeBron or Magic or Bird wins a title alone. I think Melo is a lazy rebounder (he could average 8-10 annually) and defender but he's very talented. How many high-quality pieces do the Knicks have on their team?

45andhatched
45andhatched

@BigBubbaRe-watch the 2009 Western Conference championship if you think Melo can't lead.  Nuggets just came up a couple of plays short in a season of tens of thousands of plays.

We praise Kevin Durant for being so bad his rookie year that they were able to add Westbrook and we don't give Melo any credit for immediately turning Denver into a playoff contender.  Screwed up world.

and if he is not on fire.. which is often then he is worthless to his team.. Melo has a lot of games where his shots match his point total.
