Video: O.J. Mayo ties his shoelaces rather than play defense; Nuggets score

Look, O.J. Mayo. We get it.

The Bucks are 10-44. You’ve lost your starting job. You’re having your worst season as a pro. And you’re now clinging to your spot in the rotation despite being the highest-paid player on the worst team in the league. Your Bucks are 3-19 since New Year’s Day. It’s cold as hell outside. And your one glimmer of hope, the NBA trade deadline, faded away on Thursday and you’re still stuck in Wisconsin.

But this is inexcusable.

As the headline suggests, rather than play defense in the third quarter of the Bucks’ 101-90 loss to the Nuggets on Thursday, Mayo tied shoes. He literally stopped what he was doing, bent down, and tied his shoelaces. While the Nuggets had the ball. And were running a play.

Needless to say, Denver took advantage of the obvious 5-on-4 opportunity and scored with ease. In 23 minutes of play, Mayo finished with 11 points, three rebounds, a plus-minus rating of -11 and one memorable video of him not giving a flying Buck.

To Mayo’s credit, Nuggets guard Randy Foye didn’t exactly try to exploit the matchup. Maybe there’s some kind of unspoken rule NBA shooting guards.

Lost in all of this is that, after the basket was made, the ball was rebounded by a Nuggets player and he attempted to score again while well-guarded by a Bucks player.  Must've been an NBA rule change I hadn't heard about...

So we're just going to ignore that he was he was right in front of the man he was responsible for defensively?  It's right there in the video, see the guy with the opposite color jersey in front of Mayo.   The guy who isn't doing anything.  Way to unnecessarily drag a guy's name through the mud.

And no one noticed a drop off in his defensive effectiveness...

Great example of why I stopped watching b-ball. Hockey is a team game played by real men, not spoiled, stoned, man children. NBA blows!

literally stopped what he was doing, dropped to his knees, and tied his shoelaces. <-- funny in the video, I don't see dropping to his knees. I see him bending over andmtying shoes. If you are going to report on something, at least attempt to make sure you detail it correctly

@mysteryman Yeah, something 3% of Americans care about is a great sport.  Good luck with that one chief.

@mysteryman  Oh yes, a sport where grown men whine, cry and pummel each other with fists and sticks. That's a REAL sport.

@mysteryman  Yes! Any "sport" that requires no running, jumping, catching or throwing has got to be the best there is. Everyone knows historically that white men tend to be the most superior athletes in the world.

@CoreyHardin Since when is American taste the standard to measure what is good by? If Im not mistaken, your country is crazy for Justin Bieber.

@CoreyHardin @mysteryman  3% is a higher number than the amount of basketball players that can skate...or swim. Wait, that's racist since it's not a black guy making derogatory comments about another race. Google derogatory if you need to know what it means.

Plenty  of sports don't require any of that and are still sports. Hockey being one such sport, cycling being another. If you cared to look at the Olympics this year you would have noticed sports like speed skating, cross country skiing, downhill skiing. By your criterion, swimming is not a sport because there is n "running, jumping, catching or throwing" BUT darts is a sport because there is throwing. White guys may not be the best athletes in the world, but youre the dumbest piece of crap in the world.

What's with the racism?  I thought everyone was equal?  Except for white guys, I guess.  You can say anything you like about them and they can't fight back -- one of the privileges of being an all-powerful oppressor.
